文本框: 一、课程简介及目标

Oral English 2 is a course created to encourage English Majors to develop their knowledge of,and practice speaking, that universal Lingua Franca - the Queen’s English! - with a little bit of American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, and South African English thrown in too, in an informative but hopefully entertaining manner. Using the course textbook, Learn to Talk, which will be augmented with video amongst other media sources to promote students’ enthusiasm, students  will have their focus drawn towards increasing their current knowledge of English vocabulary, points of grammar usage and correct (Standard British English) pronunciation, and of course, speaking, through the examination of a variety of topics.The emphasis is on speaking English. Students will be encouraged to speak often and as loudly as possible. Some emphasis will be given to different English accents from around the English speaking world, as well as demonstrations of colloquialisms and slang, as anoptional extra.Apart from the usual homework, there will be a midterm and and final in-class oral examinations.

Note: Course syllabus and lessons may change at the teacher’s discretion when necessary.

 

            The Five Required Qualities:

Personal Values: Students will improve their grasp of the English language, as to being able to communicate with English speaking peoples of other nations which may improve their global outlook.

Professional Methods: Students will improve their grasp of the English language, as being able to communicate with English speaking peoples of other nations will improve their qualifications in the global jobs market. Being taught by a native speaker of English, students will be able to digest, interpret and better pronounce vocabulary in their ability to speak English.

Professional Techniques: Being taught by a native speaker of English, students will be able to digest, interpret and better pronounce with their ability to speak English. The assistance of audio and video will also aid in the classroom instruction.

Occupational Aptitudes: For English Majors, their ability to understand the English language will improve their qualifications in whatever occupation they  choose to enter in our increasingly globalised world.

Way of Thinking: Students will be encouraged to understand that improving their grasp of the English language will improve their global outlook, as being able to communicate with English speaking peoples whether in business or for pleasure, can only improve their occupational and social skills in the future.

 

    The Three Required Dimensions:

1. English Language Immersion: Students will be immersed in the English Language. As I do not speak the Chinese language, students have no choice but to communicate with me in English. English will be the only language spoken in class.Course book will be taught in English, powerpoint presentations and all video presentations will be in English, all class discussions will be in English, and all homework assignments will be in English. The most thorough method for students to lern the spoken word of English is for them to be completely immersed in the English language itself. The harder students work, the better they will learn.

2. Depth of Teaching Content: The course textbook provides the basis for class discussions and work. In each class, different social intercourse for different social everyday occurrences will be taught and repeated and performed. The course book will be supplemented with powerpoint and video presentations to emphasize content which is being taught. Students will learn English vocabulary and syntax appropriate for daily life, which, if they absorb this information, will help them speak more naturally in English on a more independent level. The harder students work, the better they will learn.

3. Academic Pressure: If students wish to succeed and pass this course, gain  their credit and graduate, they must try their best, attend every class, participate to the best of their abilities in every class, do their homework, and perform well on their midterm and final oral examinations. This will be instilled at the beginning of the course, and students will be reminded of this, and encouraged to do their best throughout this course. The harder students work, the better they will learn.

         教学要求:

          As this is an English speaking course, the communicative approach will be applied here. You will hear me speak, you will respond. You will hear other native speakers of English speak, and you will respond accordingly. You and I will have conversations galore. We will look at various topics, look at vocabulary used to talk about these topics, and we will have many, many conversations. You have no option but to speak English. Hopefully, at some point, we will have something of interest to talk about for each and every one of you. We will use the course textbook as a guide, but be prepared to think for yourself and be spontaneous.
