Welcome to Oral English 1.

Oral English 1 is a course all about speaking English. English is an international language spoken by people in many countries with many accents, colloquialisms, slang terms, and an enormous variety of vocabulary. There is no right or wrong way to speak English, just different ways. In this course we will look at how English is spoken around the world. We will practice English pronunciation, explore English vocabulary, and get you all to practice your speaking of English. The textbook we will use, Interchange 1, uses a range of topics such as introductions, jobs, shopping, music and entertainment, family, sport and exercise, family, leisure time, your neighbourhood, and appearance. The textbook will be augmented with PPT and lots of video material expanding on the textbook material. We will also look at English speaking culture from around the world.

Although English is spoken in many different ways, the most important thing is to be able to understand what is being said to you, and that you are able to get your message across to the other person. We will look at pronunciation, grammar, sentence structure, and practice lots and lots of speaking.

The best way to learn a new language is to practice with a native speaker. I am a native speaker of English, and you and I will be having many conversations together about many different topics. Hopefully you will find this course interesting and help you improve your English speaking ability.

I look forward to seeing you in the new term at the University of Sanya.
