Oral English 2 is a course created to encourage English Majors todevelop their knowledge of,and practice speaking, that universal Lingua Franca- the Queen’s English! - with a little bit of American, Canadian, Australian,New Zealand, and South African English thrown in too, in an informative buthopefully entertaining manner. Using the course textbook, Learn to Talk, which will be augmented with videoamongst other media sources to promote students’ enthusiasm, students  will have their focus drawn towardsincreasing their current knowledge of English vocabulary, points of grammarusage and correct (Standard British English) pronunciation, and of course,speaking, through the examination of a variety of topics.The emphasis is onspeaking English. Students will be encouraged to speak often and as loudly aspossible. Some emphasis will be given to different English accents from aroundthe English speaking world, as well as demonstrations of colloquialisms and slang, as anoptional extra.Apart fromthe usual homework, there will be a midterm and and final in-class oralexaminations.

Note: Course syllabus and lessons may change at the teacher’s discretionwhen necessary.

 

            The Five RequiredQualities:

Personal Values: Students will improve their graspof the English language, as to being able to communicate with English speakingpeoples of other nations which may improve their global outlook.

Professional Methods: Students will improve theirgrasp of the English language, as being able to communicate with Englishspeaking peoples of other nations will improve their qualifications in theglobal jobs market. Being taught by a native speaker of English, students willbe able to digest, interpret and better pronounce vocabulary in their abilityto speak English.

Professional Techniques: Being taught by a nativespeaker of English, students will be able to digest, interpret and betterpronounce with their ability to speak English. The assistance of audio andvideo will also aid in the classroom instruction.

Occupational Aptitudes: For English Majors, theirability to understand the English language will improve their qualifications inwhatever occupation they  choose to enterin our increasingly globalised world.

Way of Thinking: Students will be encouraged tounderstand that improving their grasp of the English language will improvetheir global outlook, as being able to communicate with English speakingpeoples whether in business or for pleasure, can only improve theiroccupational and social skills in the future.

 

    The Three Required Dimensions:

1. English Language Immersion: Students will beimmersed in the English Language. As I do not speak the Chinese language,students have no choice but to communicate with me in English. English will be the only language spoken in class.Coursebook will be taught in English, powerpoint presentations and all videopresentations will be in English, all class discussions will be in English, andall homework assignments will be in English. The most thorough method forstudents to lern the spoken word of English is for them to be completelyimmersed in the English language itself. The harder students work, thebetter they will learn.

2. Depth of TeachingContent: The course textbook provides the basis for class discussionsand work. In each class, different social intercourse for different socialeveryday occurrences will be taught and repeated and performed. The course bookwill be supplemented with powerpoint and video presentations to emphasizecontent which is being taught. Students will learn English vocabulary andsyntax appropriate for daily life, which, if they absorb this information, willhelp them speak more naturally in English on a more independent level. Theharder students work, the better they will learn.

3. Academic Pressure: If students wish to succeed and pass this course, gain  their credit and graduate, they must try their best, attend every class, participate to the best of their abilities in every class, do their homework, and perform well on their midterm and final oral examinations. This will be instilled at the beginning of the course, and students will be reminded of this, and encouraged to do their best throughout this course. The harder students work, the better they will learn.

         教学要求:

          As this is an English speaking course, thecommunicative approach will be applied here. You will hear me speak, you willrespond. You will hear other native speakers of Englishspeak, and you will respond accordingly. You and I will have conversations galore.We will look at various topics, look at vocabulary used to talk about thesetopics, and we will have many, many conversations. You have no option but tospeak English. Hopefully, at some point, we will have something of interest totalk about for each and every one of you. We will use the course textbook as aguide, but be prepared to think for yourself and be spontaneous.
